Evaluation: Includes professional examination of the entire mouth, probing of gum depths, and evaluation of the crown of the tooth. Based on examination, an individualized treatment plan is formulated.
Cleaning: Helps to maintain or improve periodontal and dental health. Includes a professional scaling, above and below the gumline, and polishing similar to the care you receive at a human dentist.
Radiology: Assesses structures below the gumline that can not be evaluated with the human eye. Specifically, we assess for teeth that need treatment and for signs of advanced disease around the roots.
Surgery: When needed, sometimes diseased teeth need treatment such as extraction. In addition, for advanced periodontal therapy, surgical procedures can be done below the gumline to help save teeth when the bone becomes diseased.
Periodontal treatment: For pets with advanced disease below the gumline, an antibiotic called doxycycline can be placed to help decrease inflammation and pocket depth.
Pain Management: To help decrease discomfort and pain associated with dental procedures, we provide pain management in a multi-modal fashion. Pets undergoing surgical procedures receive local anesthesia, much like humans do at dentists when receiving treatment for cavities.
Plaque Barrier Application: By applying a wax-like substance called OraVet or a polymer called Sanos (click for pdf download) during the dental cleaning, plaque and calculus formation is decreased in the long term. Sanos (click for pdf download) requires no home care. Oravet requiress less than a minute each week applying a new waxy coat to help maintain that barrier.
Homecare Consultation: Dental care is only successful if a program is instituted at home. Our staff will work with you and your pet to formulate an appropriate management plan to help maintain the oral health of your pet. And after your pet's dental, we invite you to return in 2-3 weeks for a dental recheck appointment with one of our dental technicians at no extra charge.
